Our Vision

From one project to a better way of finding geothermal resources. Kootenay Lake is Threshold Energy’s first project, but the opportunity extends beyond a single geothermal resource. Many geothermal systems in western Canada occur in complex geological environments where conventional exploration methods may not adequately identify the fractures and fluid pathways controlling the resource.

The work underway at Kootenay Lake is helping us develop an increasingly integrated approach to geothermal exploration—combining geology, structural analysis, geochemistry and multiple geophysical datasets to improve subsurface targeting. If successful, this approach could be applied to other prospective geothermal regions. Our longer-term objective is therefore larger than developing one project: Build a Canadian geothermal exploration and development company capable of finding difficult-to-identify geothermal resources, reducing exploration risk, and developing them in partnership with the people and communities connected to the land.

THE OPPORTUNITY BENEATH OUR FEET

Canada possesses enormous geothermal potential, but much of it remains unexplored. Unlocking that potential requires better exploration, disciplined investment and development models capable of creating lasting local value. Threshold Energy is beginning that work at Kootenay Lake.

WHAT COULD GEOTHERMAL SUPPORT?

One resource. Multiple possibilities.

Geothermal energy is unusual among renewable resources because it can provide reliable energy 24 hours a day, regardless of weather.

Depending on the temperature and productivity of the resource, geothermal energy can support:

Direct Heat
District heating, greenhouses, food production, aquaculture, industrial processes and other thermal applications.

Electricity
Reliable, renewable baseload power capable of complementing intermittent renewable generation.

Combined Energy Systems
Higher-temperature resources can potentially generate electricity first, with remaining thermal energy used for heating, agriculture or other applications.

No development outcome has been predetermined at Kootenay Lake.

First we prove the resource. Then we determine its best use.
